Weekly Roundup #006

Weekly Roundup #006

Aye up m'ducks! I'm a bit behind again with me updates here on the blog, work has gone bonkers busy in the best way, and it's been a week of all over the shop, so this lil' update is a bit late!

I was lucky enough to kick off the week with a trip to the big smoke! I had a double-whammy day, visiting my friend James at LEGO and getting to give a creative talk to some of his creative colleagues! It was an absolute pleasure to be in the hallowed halls of LEGO, what a treat that was!

After chinwagging with the people of the bricks, I hot-stepped across town to visit the just-as-exciting 195 Picadilly... the home of BAFTA! It was National Careers Week so BAFTA and IntoFilm were putting on a series of panels, talks and sessions with Educators across the UK. I was lucky enough to be able to share my story, on that iconic stage, with two incredibly inspiring humans: Production & Costume Designer Paix Robinson Jones and Performance Director Beth Park! To top it off, it was hosted by the lovely Ms Internet aka "We're just innocent men" aka Lauren Layfield (We know each other from Ricky's CBBC Art Ninja days)!

I am such a fan of the institution that BAFTA is, so to be up there on that stage sharing my story... flippin' heck, that means so much. Thank you to the wonderful Anna @ Aardman for making it happen, and to Lisa @ BAFTA and the team for being so welcoming!

In between all that fun, been busy at the studio, working on something really exciting, with a wonderful bunch of folk! At night me and James aka Signalnoise have been busy working on our talk for Paradiso... because we're in Merida, Mexico next week! That means next week's update will come live & direct from Merida! Here's a subtle, reserved, traditional bit of design we cooked up for our session...

As subtle as a brick! Anyways, that's enough from me, wish us luck for our talk next week, catch you all soon!

Gav.

WHAT AM I PLAYING?

Honestly.... still falling deeper down the TCG Pocket rabbithole! A new pack was released - Triumphant Light - so the whole playerbase is busy chasing down those illusive shineys and rad immersive cards! (I got lucky and pulled the new Arceus EX immersive!)

I haven't played it yet (as its not out) - but this Terminator 2 2D pixel art side-scroller looks so rad, I'm so here for it!

The behind-the-scenes of its creation looks great too!

WHAT AM I LISTENING TO?

  • BonoboFragments
  • Elliott SmithFigure 8
  • Clams CasinoInstrumental Relics
  • DoechiiAlligator Bites Never Heal

I know I'm super slow to catch onto this... but Doechii is amazing! Her 'Alligator Bites Never Heal' EP is fantastic, with 90's boom bap beats and her comedy & clever delivery are a perfect match!

Her Grammy's performance is a sight to behold, so so good, check it out!

WHAT AM I WATCHING?

Very, very slowly working our way through Severence Season 2 (a certain little person keeps waking up every night, so we're not managing to get through any TV shows!).

I have been hugely enjoying the 'Adventure' series on Apple Vision Pro though, they're immersive films profiling all sorts of human endeavours, from Ice Diving to Parkour (PARKOUR!)

WHAT'S CAUGHT MY EYE?

Aardman's own Gavin Lines, graphic artist extroidinaire, has been profiled on the Graphics Union insta account, showcasing all of his amazing creations for the Aardman movies over the years!
